Resolution passed opposing PSE&G transmission lines
(by Allison Cassara/Correspondent - October 08, 2008)
The Montville Township Committee passed a resolution opposing PSE&G 500 kilovolt transmission lines to be installed within the township’s borders.
The committee cited that PSE&G failed to answer concerns presented by various township residents during a special meeting held on July 17 and had promised to submit a booklet with more information.
“Our residents expect a response,” said Jean Bader, committeewoman.
During the July meeting, citizens questioned PSE&G about the potential health repercussions installing transmission lines could have, specifically noting a link to an increase in childhood leukemia cases.
One resident, Peter Kerns of Towaco, mentioned a recent study in Japan that confirmed the link between the two. Representatives from the PSE&G - including George Sous, the company’s Regional Public Affairs Manager and Greg Olson, manager of Electric Magnetic Field Issues - told Montville residents they rely on information from independent research studies.
Currently, New Jersey has no standard in place to regulate electric magnetic fields. PSE&G said it would abide by any policies enacted by the state.
