OLMC students participate in Project ACES

On Wednesday, May 7, students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School participated in “Project ACES, starting at 10 a.m.  For six weeks, under the direction of Physical Education Teacher Doreen Ohlott, the students of OLMC focused on how they can improve fitness through physical education.

Project ACES began in 1989. Physical Education Teacher Len Saunders of Valley View Elementary School in Montville wanted to get one school in every state to exercise at the same time on a specific day in May to motivate his physical education classes to exercise.

After a letter-writing campaign to schools throughout the United States, Len received participation confirmations from schools in every state. In 1989, ACES stood for "American Children Exercising Simultaneously."

Shortly after the 1989 event, Saunders began receiving inquiries from around the county and even outside the United States. The project was renamed All Children Exercise Simultaneously in 1990.

The 20th annual global event is celebrated during May which is National Physical Fitness and Sports month.  The students of OLMC were part of millions of school children all over the globe who particpated in this non-competitive program, which is both educational and motivational.

According to Ohlott students from pre-K 3 through eighth grade joined in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, dancing, and power walking.
