Bodice-rippers are revealing mind as well as body

Maybe you can’t “tell a book by its cover,” but you can probably tell something about a person by the books he or she is reading.

We all know that fiction and non-fiction compile the two basic categories for readers. But within fiction there are wide choices -  mysteries, romance novels and period pieces - set in different decades, often in different locales. Non-fiction writing,  supposedly based on factual information, ranges from historical to biographical. In still another sub-category, we can’t forget the how-to and advice books.

Our local library not only organizes its new books in a separate bookcase, it also features a few editions displayed on the top shelf of the new books case. The librarian has often selected titles that may not have reached the Best Seller list but, we think, should be.

Readers, just like television audiences, tend to choose the genre that piques their interest. Tell-all books attract the same people drawn to the nightly TV celebrity gossip shows. Those who prefer televised crime dramas are often mystery-book readers. The History Channel is, no doubt, a favorite among people who enjoy historical novels.

But then there are all those “closet” readers - the ones who profess to be high-minded but totally devour raunchy, sex-filled reading material. We’ve known people who strongly object to foul language and off-color remarks. Oddly, they are fans of cable television comedians who base a lot of their material on sex and other bodily functions. They also read raunchy fiction, vicariously enjoying a world to which they vocally and publicly disapprove.

Librarians must surely perceive people through the kaleidoscope of  books being checked out. In a book store, it’s not as easy because buyers can always say the purchase is a gift for a friend.

So, when your librarian smiles at you when she or he checks you out, remember it may not be just the book the librarian is checking out.
